B Corps are certified by the nonprofit B Lab to meet rigorous standards of social and environmental performance and who are focused on improving the quality of life in communities through business.
“As we looked at our social impact strategy, it was important to us to use a global standard to measure social performance, and ensure transparency and accountability,” said Shift Capital’s Principal and Head of Impact Matthew Grande. “Being a Certified B Corporation® demonstrates to everyone, from our team to the community, and from our investors to our tenants, that our social goals are as equally important as our financial goals.”
B Corp certification is essentially to sustainable business what Fair Trade certification is to coffee or USDA Organic certification is to milk. To become certified, Shift had to prove that the company met stringent performance requirements outlined in the B Impact Assessment, a globally-recognized standard that looks at environmental performance, how a company treats its employees, the impact the company has on its customers and the broader community, as well as the company’s accountability, governance, and transparency practices.
Being a Certified B Corporation® amplifies the values we live as a company and our mission focus. It’s more than a stamp or designation. It’s our business standard. It helps us to think holistically, guiding our strategic decisions and informing our projects and programs.
Shift has long been committed to serving society and our investors. We deploy development strategies in underserved neighborhoods that align capital and long-term community success. We work to create community wealth and health by minimizing the negative impacts of gentrification while positively impacting communities affected by inter-generational poverty. We seek to accelerate job creation, improve health and safety, and offer quality housing through thoughtful development that helps catalyze shared prosperity.
